I surprised myself with writing about the bombing of the US embassy in Kenya 1998. Not only in finally being able to write about it, but in being able to write at all. I haven't written anything that long since I first came back from Kenya that year, suddenly unable to remember things, confused, unable to speak on the phone, unable to read a book, to recall a word. I came back with Lyme disease and Babesiosis. I had contracted them both from a single tick bite received during wildlife field work in California before I even left for Kenya. I wasn't diagnosed with Lyme for 4 months, and with Babesiosis WA-1 until 4 years had passed. I remember feeling a little achy and tired, and having a nasty rash on my right hip. I was so busy getting ready to go to Kenya to prepare for adopting our son that I paid little attention. How I would wish that were not so!
But that story is for another night. Tonight I just wish to say that it feels good to be able to write a bit. I feel I am bursting with things to say. I am also able to read short essays and articles, and once in a great while a simple book, so I have hope I may be reading books again one day soon. After 11 years that would be such a treat! So, happy days now that these things are returning, along with my art. A new life, all fresh and tender and not so vulnerable as you might think. TaaDaa!!
